Department of theoretical and applied space physics

The Department of theoretical and applied space physics (DTASP) was organized in 1971 basing on the first SINP spce-physical experimental and design laboratory (ESL) (headed by PhD. A.G.Nikolaev) and the Laboratory of theoretical spce physics (headed by Professor Boris Tverskoy). Boris Tverskoy, one of the leading scientists in the field of space physics was the Head of the Laboratory from the very beginning and till the end of his life in 1997. From 1997 till 2004 the Laboratory was headed by DSc. Elmar Sosnovets, from 2004 till 2011 - by PhD. Vladimir Tulupov, and since 2011 till present - by PhD. Vladislav Osedlo.

The main objective of the Laboratory is development of fundamental basis and experimental studies of the processes in the Earth magnetosphere and interplanetary space, which are important for space exploration.

The first experiments of SINP in the field of near-Earth and interplanetary space physics were developed at ESL and later - at the Department. The outer Earth radiation belt was discovered in 1958 onboard the 3d satellite. The structure, composition and dynamics of the Earth radiation belts and ring current were detailed studied onboard the satellites of "Elektron", "Molniya", "Kosmos" series, etc. The characteristics of the solar and galactic cosmic rays were explored during the experiments onboard space probes of "Mars", "Venera", "Luna". Later this information was used for diagnostics of solar activity, solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field.

Professor Boris Tverskoy has developed currently generally accepted theory of the Earth radiation belts, theory of large-scale magnetospheric-ionospheric interactions, which provided a basis for description of the processes during magnetospheric storms and sub-storms, a basis of theory of turbulent acceleration and generation of magnetic fields during convective movements on the Sun.

Currently the scientists of the Department provide regularly monitoring of radiation conditions in the near-Earth space during the experiments onboard different spacecrafts by means of the equipment developed and produced at the Department. Complex analisys of the dynamics of hihg-energetic particles and plasma in the Earth's magnetosphere, including electrons acceleration up to relativistic energy, production and dynamics of radiation belts and ring current, energetic particles penetration to high latitudes, production of discrete auroral arcs, dynamics of magnetospheric boundary layers is conducted basing on the measurements onboard satellites "Meteor", "Glonass", "Elektro", etc. Dynamical processes in the solar photosphere and magnetosphere are simulated numerically.

The scientists of the Department actively cooperate with different scientific centers: IKI RAS, Intitute of Medical and Biological Problems RAS, Institute of Applied Geophysics, M.V.Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics, Immanuil Kant Baltic Federal University (Kaliningrad), Institute of Computational Mathematics and Mathematical Geophysics SB RAS (Novosibirsk), Novosibirsk State University.

The scientists participate in the development of the experiments onboard different spacecrafts and in the analysis of the experimental data within the frames of top-priority scientific directions on the studies of heliosphere and magnetospheres of the planets and development of the radiation conditions monitoring system.
