Department on space monitoring

Department of space monitoring (DSM) was organized in 2005. It's Head is DSc. Vladimir Kalegaev.

Objectives of the research:

– receive, processing and storage of the space experiments data;
– analysis and imaging of space information;
– studies of space environment and space weather.

The basic purpose of the DSM is monitoring and analysis of radiation conditions in space and imaging of the received information on the special sites.

To this end following structes are organized in the DSM:
- Space Monitoring Data Center including integrated database of SINP scientific experiments, computerized system of satellite data receive and processing, space data access and imaging facilities on http://smdc.sinp.msu.ru;
- fully computerized system of the current space weather analysis on http://swx.sinp.msu.ru.

The basic data on space radiation conditions are provided by Russian satellites "Meteor-M1" and "Electro-L1" with onboard equipment for registration of electron fluxes within the energy ranges from 50 eV up to hundreds of MeV developed by SINP scientists. Incoming information is processed in a near real-time mode in the Space Monitoring Data Center and used for current analysis of the near-Earth space radiation conditions. In as little as several minutes after data received they are available on the Web-portal of the Center (http://smdc.sinp.msu.ru).

In order to provide and near real-time monitoring and to forecast the near-Earth space radiation conditions the scientists of the Department also apply data of other experiments, in particular:
– SDO (Solar Dynamics Observatory, NASA) – solar images at different wavelengths;
– ACE (Advanced Composition Explorer, NASA) – data on solar wind parameters in libration point L1;
– GOES (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite, NOAA) – data on particles fluxes at geostationary orbit.

Analysis and forecasting of the near-Earth space conditions is based on space environment simulations.

In the short run it is planned to apply data of other satellite experiments, including those onboard SINP satellites "Lomonosov" and "Relec" which are planned to be launched in the second half of 2013.

The scientists of the Department work in close cooperation with colleagues from IZMIRAN, Space Research Institute (IKI RAN), Institute of applied geophysics, NASA Space weather center, Finnish meteorological institute.
